Legumes reduce colon polyps study
Eating legumes at least three times a week and brown rice at least once a week was linked to a reduced risk of colon polyps by 33 percent and 40 percent respectively, according to Loma Linda University research, recently published in Nutrition and Cancer. High consumption of cooked green vegetables and dried fruit was also associated with greater protection. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the third most common cancer in both men and women, according to the American Cancer Society. Results also show that consuming cooked green vegetables once a day or more, as compared to less than five times a week, was associated with a 24 percent reduction in the risk of rectal/colon polyps. Consuming dried fruit three times a week or more, versus less than once a week, was associated with a 26 percent reduced risk.

Brain Function Improvements with Berries
“A recent presentation at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) brought to light studies that highlight berries’ ability to switch on a natural ‘housekeeper’ mechanism in the brain. Shibu Poulose, PhD, who is with the US Department of Agriculture--Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston, gave the presentation, stating that this new research was built on previous studies that suggested that a factor in aging is a constant decline in the body’s ability to protect itself against inflammation and oxidative damage. ‘The good news is that natural compounds called polyphenolics found in fruits, vegetables, and nuts have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect that may protect against age-associated decline,’ Poulose said. One of the experiments proving berries’ effectiveness involved using cultures of mouse brain cells. Poulose and other researchers found that extracts of berries inhibited the action of a protein that shuts down the autophagy process. ‘Our research suggests that the polyphenolics in berries have a rescuing effect. They seem to restore the normal housekeeping function. These findings are the first to show these effects of berries,’ Poulose said.”

Omega-3 and Hearing Loss
There’s an old saying that goes, ‘Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.’ Well, it turns out that if said man eats said fish—especially if it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids—he may avoid joining the ranks of the more than 36 million Americans with hearing loss. According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, adults over the age of 50 who ate omega-3-rich fish at least twice a week were 42 percent less likely to develop hearing loss than their counterparts who consumed less than one serving of fish weekly. Even if you aren’t worried about your hearing, the essential fatty acids found in fish boast a variety of health benefits such as cardiovascular protection and improvements in cognitive function and mood. Salmon, tuna, sardines, and other oily fish are excellent sources of omega-3s, but if you really want to cover your bases, take a high-quality fish oil supplement every day as well.”

New Studies Reveal Important Water Benefits
New studies are showing that water is more important to humans than previously taught to medical students. Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have shown that ordinary water has some unexpected physiological effects. It increases the activity of the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) nervous system, which raises alertness, blood pressure, and energy expenditure. Subsequently the American Red Cross found that drinking 16 ounces of water before blood donation reduced the fainting response by 20 percent. The June issue of the journal Hypertension reported on findings that water dilutes the plasma in the blood vessels leading away from the duodenum and this short-lived reduction in salt concentration (hypo-osmolality) is responsible for water's blood pressure-raising (pressor) effect. They implicated a protein called Trpv4 in the mechanism. Mice lacking the Trpv4 gene did not have a pressor response to water. Since water raises sympathetic nervous system activity and consequently energy expenditure, it can help promote weight loss.

Thieves Blend and Skin Issues
User submitted tip
Linda Ridder submitted the following tip:
At the age of 39, I still battled with some skin issues. I used Thieves®, peppermint, lemon, and frankincense essential oils the most, either by inhaling from the bottle; applying topically to my wrists, feet, and back of neck; or adding a drop or two to whatever I was drinking. To my surprise, my complexion dramatically improved within a month! Young Living is amazing!

Blueberry Joice - and Your Memory?
A new study done by researchers at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center showed that drinking wild blueberry juice every day improved the memory of aging adults with memory problems. Blueberries contain polyphenol compounds, the most prominent of which are anthocyanins. Anthocyanins have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and have also been associated with increased neuronal signaling in brain centers, which mediates memory function as well as improved glucose disposal. These benefits would be expected to mitigate neurodegeneration. The researchers measured the effects of daily consumption of wild blueberry juice in a sample of nine older adults over a 12-week period. The findings of this preliminary study suggest that moderate-term blueberry supplementation may confer neurocognitive benefits and establish a basis for more comprehensive human trials to study preventive potential and neuronal mechanisms.

Cruciferous Benefits to Arteries
Researchers from London's Imperial College found that if the innermost layer of cells at branches and bends of arteries lack the active form of a protective protein called Nrf2, the arteries are prone to inflammation and disease. However, exposure to the natural compound sulforaphane reduced inflammation at the high-risk areas by switching on Nrf2, explained Paul Evans, thus restoring the cells ability to protect themselves. Sulforaphane is found most heavily in broccoli, but also in other cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts.

Rare Fungus Reported in Washington, Oregon
From 1999 through to early 2008, two hundred and sixteen people in British Columbia have been infected with C. Gatti, and eight died from complications related to it. The fungus also infects animals, such as dogs, koalas and dolphins. In 2007, the fungus appeared for the first time in the United States, in Whatcom County, Washington and in April 2010 had spread to Oregon. The most recently identified strain, designated VGIIc, is particularly virulent, having proved fatal in 19 out of 218 known victims.

Basic facts about Cryptococcus gattii:
Who gets Cryptococcus gattii cryptococcosis?
Cryptococcosis is the disease caused by the fungus Cryptococcus. Infections with C. gattii have occurred in both healthy persons without compromised immune systems and in persons with conditions affecting their immune system. A wide range of animals can also develop C. gattii cryptococcosis.
How is Cryptococcus gattii spread?
C. gattii spores appear to live in association with certain trees and the soil around trees. Humans can become infected by inhalation of airborne fungi which are spread from these sources.
C. gattii cryptococcosis is not known to be spread from person to person, animal to animal, or from animals to humans.
What are the symptoms of a infection with Cryptococcus gattii?
Infection with C. gattii may cause a pneumonia-like illness, with shortness of breath, coughing, nausea, and fever. Another common form of C. gattii infection is central nervous system infection, such as meningoencephalitis. Symptoms may include fever, headache, or a change in mental status. How soon do symptoms of Cryptococcus gattii infection appear?
Symptoms from C. gattii infection are estimated to begin anywhere from 2-14 months after exposure.

My Cold Sore Story with Therapeutic Lavender Oil
Cold sores have been an issue with me for as long as I can remember and your question is common to all cold sore sufferers.
I have tried everything under the sun... and in the last two years I have discovered the following steps to reduce or sometimes stop on-setting symptoms with success:
1. Use therapeutic grade Lavender oil (see resource for more in depth information). The secret is to place several drops inside your mouth on the inside part of the sore. Normally we are told to put "something" right on top of the sore. Sometimes I use Oregano Oil, which is much more powerful and it almost numbs your mouth. I carry the oils with me and use periodically during the day when the cold sore is in the active stage.
2. Before going to sleep take one aspirin and a vitamin B supplement (start with a small dosage). Sometimes I start with this step right away, if I sense a "big one" coming. This has been almost "miraculous". In the morning the symptoms are almost gone, with no imflammation and only small evidence left in scab form (which can be covered up with some skin colored makeup cream).
For a long term strategy, reduce or eliminate the consumption of chocolates. This is a tip my daughter received from a Doctor two years ago and which I have followed closely. Result: drastic reduction of cold sores, and symptoms are mild by comparison, especially when I use steps 1 and 2 above.
Hope this helps...and best of success!!!
Severe Respiratory Illness - Warning to Mexico Travelers
This is a concern for travelers to/from Mexico.
Note: Latest reporting is describing this as swine flu related. For more detailed information the Centers for Disease Control has a web page which can be found by clicking here:
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/general_info.htm
A severe respiratory illness appears to have infected 137 people in south and central areas of Mexico, with cases concentrated in Mexico City and three other areas, including 20 deaths, the Public Health Agency of Canada said.
"We are not sure where this is in Mexico, but it's not the tourist area," said Dr. Allison McGeer, director of infection control at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
The deaths were mostly men between the ages of 25 and 44, according to an advisory sent out by federal health authorities.
Hundreds of people have also reportedly been hospitalized and health-care workers have also been infected.
Officials said there are not yet any reports of the illness outside Mexico.
Alberto Lozano, spokesman for the Mexican Embassy in Ottawa, said doctors in his country are on top of the outbreak.
"This is pretty serious situation. But on the other hand, it is not an epidemic, so preventive measures have been taken to reduce the risk of contagion in Mexico."
The cause of the illness has not been confirmed. Mexican health officials said samples so far have tested positive for influenza A and B.
The working hypothesis is that the cases could be a late-season surge in seasonal influenza, said McGeer, noting most of the illnesses in Mexico have not been serious and there has been nothing new in the last five or six days.
Look for flu-like symptoms that include:
Fever.
Cough.
Sore throat.
Muscle and joint pain.
Shortness of breath.
The illness may elevate to a severe respiratory illness within about five days.

Why Knowing about Grades of Oils is Important
Something that was not clear to me at first is that there is a BIG difference between the types of Essential Oils. For all I knew, oils were oils, and even though I knew about lavender scented products in my grocery store - I had no idea about the possibilities of supporting my health, naturally, with Essential Oils.
There are 4 Grades of Essential Oils:
* Grade A oils are pure therapeutic quality and are usually made from organically grown plants distilled at the proper temperatures using steam distillation.
* Grade B oils are food grade; they may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, extenders, or carrier oils.
* Grade C oils are perfume grade and may contain the same type of adulterating chemicals as food grade oils. They usually contain solvents which are used to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents are normally cancerous.
* Floral Water is a byproduct of the distillation process, a very high quality if it comes from a Grade A distillation process. Accordingly it is of low quality if it comes from poor quality raw materials and or poor distillation processes. It is usually found in skin and hair products.
I recommend Young Living Essentials Oils because they insure you get pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils in every order. Each batch, whether produced or imported, is subjected to a rigorous testing process and double checked by outside laboratories. If the oils do not meet standards, they are returned or destroyed on the spot. That means that care has been given to every single drop, to ensure that the medicinal properties have been retained.
Don't be fooled by the odor of adulterated oils and then deny yourself the therapeutical power of God's medicine chest.
